The magic of Christmas time by Phyllis Chisala

Dec 21, 2025

Christmas time is a season brimming with joy, warmth, and festive cheer. It is a time when families and friends come together to celebrate, reflect, and create lasting memories. This magical period is marked by unique traditions, vibrant decorations, and an atmosphere filled with goodwill. Let's explore the elements that make Christmas time so special.

The Spirit of Giving

One of the most celebrated aspects of Christmas is the spirit of giving. This tradition extends beyond exchanging gifts among family and friends. Many people take this opportunity to give back to their communities through charitable donations and volunteering. The act of giving brings people closer and fosters a sense of unity and compassion. That’s the essence of this season. “For God so loved the world that he gave us his one and only son Jesus Christ,” whose birth we celebrate at Christmas!

Festive Decorations

Christmas decorations transform homes and public spaces into winter wonderlands. From twinkling lights and sparkling ornaments to beautifully decorated Christmas trees, these adornments capture the essence of the season. Wreaths, mistletoe, and nativity scenes further enhance the festive atmosphere, reminding us of the holiday's rich history and traditions.

Culinary Delights

Christmas time is also synonymous with indulging in delicious food and drinks. Traditional English holiday meals often include:

- Roast turkey or ham

- Stuffing and gravy

- Mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce

- Seasonal vegetables

- Christmas pudding or pie

In addition to the main meal, many people enjoy festive treats such as gingerbread cookies, candy canes, and eggnog. These culinary delights provide an opportunity for families to come together in the kitchen, sharing recipes and creating new traditions.

It is not obligatory to serve traditional English Christmas dishes. Any preferred meals may be included on the Christmas table depending on which unique region of the world you are from. For example;

  • Australia & New Zealand: Summer weather means seafood, salads, and barbecues.
  • Italy: The Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve is a beloved tradition, but many families adapt it with their favourite seafood.
  • Zambia: Fried chicken or chicken stew with rice and vegetables is Zambia's beloved meal for Christmas.
  • Japan: Fried chicken has become a surprisingly iconic Christmas meal.
  • Caribbean nations: Dishes like jerk pork, sorrel drink, and rum cake bring bold flavours to the celebration.
  • Nigeria: Jollof rice, fried rice, and grilled meats often take Centre stage.

Music and Entertainment

Christmas music and entertainment are integral to the season's charm. Classic carols and modern holiday tunes fill the airwaves, creating a festive soundtrack that accompanies holiday activities. Many communities including work places host Christmas concerts, plays, and parades, providing entertainment for all ages and bringing people together in celebration.

Family Traditions

Family traditions are at the heart of Christmas time. Whether it's decorating the tree together, watching holiday movies, or participating in religious services, these activities hold deep meaning and create a sense of continuity across generations. They provide an opportunity for families to bond, share stories, and reflect on the true meaning of the season.

Christmas time is a magical season that embodies joy, generosity, and togetherness. It is a time to cherish loved ones, celebrate traditions, and spread kindness and goodwill. Whether through giving, decorating, cooking, or simply being present with those we care about, the magic of Christmas time is truly something to be celebrated.

I love Christmas! Everyday could be Christmas. it’s so exciting to join in everyone else’s excitement when there’s fun everywhere for those celebrating the reason for the season and those who join in because it’s tradition for them. The love for Christmas is rooted in the joy it brings. The celebration of this holiday is a reminder of the love Christ brought into the world, and that’s why we share the love with others, and the hope for a brighter future. Whether it's the twinkling lights, the warmth of a fireplace, or the sound of laughter, Christmas has a unique way of touching hearts and spreading joy.

Christmas is a time to cherish, filled with love, joy, and togetherness. It's a season that invites everyone to be a little kinder, a little more generous, and a little more joyous. Embrace the magic of Christmas and let its spirit fill your heart with happiness, and allow it to follow you in the coming year. What if we lived every day as if it was Christmas?

May this season bring you peace, joy, and an abundance of love, as you celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
